The Army Combat Fitness Test: A Threat to Combat Readiness?

Source : Defense News

The Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), designed to gauge soldiers' physical readiness with a rigorous set of exercises, has become a point of contention. Instead of accurately measuring combat preparedness, the ACFT seems to disadvantage both male and female soldiers. For men, the test has inadvertently lowered standards, while for women, it has led to significantly higher failure rates compared to the previous Army Physical Fitness Test. These discrepancies raise concerns about the ACFT's potential impact on overall combat effectiveness.

A Flawed Measure of Readiness

The ACFT includes six events: the three-repetition maximum deadlift, standing power throw, hand-release push-ups, sprint-drag-carry, plank, and a two-mile run. These events assess strength, power, endurance, and agility, but lack a flexibility component. Flexibility is essential for injury prevention and overall combat readiness. A 2022 Military Medicine study points out that focusing solely on strength may neglect important aspects of readiness, such as flexibility, endurance, and job-specific performance. Flexibility training helps prevent injuries and improves resilience in demanding conditions. The study also suggests that the ACFT's strength-based tasks may not fully address the diverse physical needs of all soldiers, highlighting the need for assessments that consider gender differences and various aspects of fitness.
