FASHION FEATURES
How Paul Smith Honors His Father’s Photography at Paris Fashion Week

A vibrant energy filled the air at Paris Fashion Week as Paul Smith unveiled his fall menswear collection.

The show, attended by K-Pop star Hongjoong of ATEEZ, was a tribute to photography, a longtime inspiration for the British designer.

At the heart of the collection was the "Field Flower" print, a vivid homage to the photographs of Paul Smith’s father, Harold. This floral motif, drawn from Harold’s lens, flowed across shirts, ties, and luxurious jacquard knitwear, weaving a deeply personal narrative into the collection’s fabric.

The influence of legendary photographers like David Bailey and Terence Donovan was unmistakable, casting their unique mark on the collection. Tailoring adopted a subtly rebellious edge, echoing the photographers’ own distinctive styles, while a rich, inky color palette inspired by Saul Leiter’s evocative photography lent the collection a moody elegance.

Tradition was playfully reinterpreted. Herringbone wool, typically stiff, was softened through a delicate laundering process, giving the garments a lived-in, relaxed feel. Bold patterns like houndstooth and Prince of Wales checks were blown up to dramatic proportions, not only adorning clothing but also extending to footwear and accessories.

Unexpected artistry appeared in the form of tailored jackets, where contrasting fabrics were seamlessly paired to create striking patchwork effects.

A collaboration with Barbour introduced a touch of country charm, with reimagined Barbour coats in unusual shades of waxed cotton and whimsical Friesian cow motifs, adding a playful yet rugged elegance to the collection.
