California’s Outdoor Drinking Zones Bill Takes Major Progress

California cities may soon create "entertainment zones" for outdoor drinking following the approval of Senate Bill 969 by the state Senate. The bill, aimed at helping cities recover from the pandemic's impact on foot traffic, is now heading to Governor Gavin Newsom's office, as announced by State Senator Scott Wiener. Sponsored by San Francisco, San Jose, and the California Nightlife Association, the bill allows cities to designate areas where restaurants and bars can serve alcohol. Similar programs exist in states like Michigan, Ohio, and Virginia. In San Francisco, Front Street will be the city’s first entertainment zone, where bars like Schroeder’s, Harrington’s, and Royal Exchange can serve drinks during special events. Beverages must be in approved non-metal or non-glass containers. Liquor stores are excluded from this provision, which focuses on restaurants and bars.
