HAIR AND BODY CARE
Onion for Hair Care? Here's Why You Should Give It a Try
The Benefits of Onion in Hair Care
“Onion juice is a powerful natural remedy that aligns perfectly with Ayurvedic principles,” say Akash and Nikita Mehta. “Onions are rich in sulfur, which stimulates the scalp, reduces hair loss, and minimizes breakage,” they explain. Clinical research has also shown that onion juice can be effective in treating alopecia areata. Miriam Freixa Villena, cosmetic chemist and R&D manager at Tara, adds that “onion extract contains antioxidants like quercetin, which helps combat oxidative stress—one of the main factors contributing to hair thinning and premature graying.”
Villena further highlights that onion is abundant in sulfur, “a crucial element in keratin production, which strengthens hair strands and promotes follicle health.” The anti-microbial properties of onion help “maintain a balanced scalp, reducing irritation and supporting healthier hair growth.” In addition, onion can improve hair shine and strength, while also addressing fungal infections and dandruff, according to Yates.

FASHION FEATURES
Polly Mellen, Iconic Fashion Advocate, Dies at 100
Polly Mellen, the unyielding and influential fashion editor who remained the last link to a golden era when fashion editors were powerful figures who shaped not only markets but also culture, passed away on Wednesday in Salisbury, Conn. She was 100, an age that Ms. Mellen, ever the perfectionist, would have surely appreciated.
Her death, confirmed by her daughter Leslie Bell, occurred at an assisted living facility.
Throughout her career, particularly during her more than 25 years at Vogue, Mellen, in collaboration with legendary photographer Richard Avedon, created some of the most iconic and provocative images in modern fashion.
She helped shape the fashion world’s most memorable visuals, including the image of Twiggy on the cover of Vogue in 1967, her face marked with a psychedelic flower, capturing the spirit of the 1960s. Another unforgettable moment came in 1981, when actress Nastassja Kinski posed for Vogue wrapped only in a boa constrictor, a striking image that stayed with viewers long after. Mellen, ever meticulous, later expressed regret over an ivory cuff Kinski wore in the shoot, feeling it was too distracting.
In 1967, she also worked with Avedon on a nude spread featuring ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, showcasing his unadorned form in a stark, bold fashion.
Perhaps one of Mellen’s most famous collaborations was in 1975 with photographer Helmut Newton. Together, they produced “The Story of Ohh,” a provocative series inspired by the erotic French novel The Story of O, which featured the model Lisa Taylor in a pose that oozed both sexual agency and confidence, marking a moment of feminist expression in the fashion world. At the time, fashion spreads were often seen as visual stories, even if their plots were elusive to outsiders.
