ENTERTAINMENT
Miss Austen’ Trailer Revealed: Keeley Hawes Shines as Jane Austen’s Sister

The BBC unveiled a trailer for its upcoming drama series Miss Austen on Tuesday, starring Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard, Line of Duty, It’s A Sin) as Jane Austen’s sister, Cassandra. The series is set to debut on Sunday, February 2, with the U.S. premiere scheduled for Sunday, May 4, on Masterpiece on PBS.

All four episodes will be available for streaming on BBC iPlayer from 6 a.m. London time on the release date, with weekly episodes airing on BBC One starting that evening. Adapted from Gill Hornby’s best-selling novel, the series is produced by Bonnie Productions for Masterpiece in association with the BBC.

Miss Austen is brought to the screen by BAFTA-winning writer Andrea Gibb (Elizabeth Is Missing, Mayflies), and reimagines the literary mystery of Cassandra Austen’s infamous destruction of her sister Jane’s letters. The drama explores the deep sisterly bond between Cassandra and Jane, while portraying Cassandra as a captivating figure, comparable to any of Austen’s iconic heroines.

The new trailer showcases Hawes as Cassandra “Cassy” Austen, highlighting her devotion to her sister Jane. The trailer also features flashbacks with Young Cassy (Synnøve Karlsen) and Jane Austen (Patsy Ferran), offering a glimpse into their romantic infatuations, female friendships, and dashed hopes—elements that influenced Jane’s timeless stories.

Set in 1830, years after Jane’s death, the plot centers on Cassandra’s visit to Isabella (Rose Leslie), the niece of her deceased fiancé, who is on the verge of losing her home after her father’s death. While Cassandra’s stated purpose is to assist Isabella, her true intention is to find a hidden bundle of private letters that could potentially tarnish Jane’s reputation. Upon discovering them, Cassandra is transported back to her youth, overwhelmed by memories.
